Outstanding players have played for West Brom over the years, but their career paths have occasionally been unconventional.
Former West Brom players have made unexpected career choices, playing in France, Cyprus, lower divisions of England, and non-league football, among other countries.
Players with great expectations, including Andy Carroll and Saido Berahino, are now playing in the French second division and for a Cypriot club, respectively.
After unsuccessful stints at West Brom, Kenneth Zohore and George Thorne have joined clubs in Poland and non-league football, illustrating the highs and lows of their respective careers.
West Brom’s fans want to go back to the good old days when they had international talent, but the team currently looks a million miles away from being promoted back to the Premier League.
Romelu Lukaku, Nicolas Anelka, and other real stars played for the Baggies throughout their eight-year Premier League run, wearing the blue and white of the Albion. However, the club is now having financial difficulties, which makes it difficult for them to move into the top six.
Some of its previous stars, who they watched play for the team in the top division, have, however, made significant career adjustments, travelling to France and Cyprus among other places. Six former Baggies players are examined by Football League World for their unexpected moves across the continent.
Carroll rose to fame after moving to Liverpool for £35 million on January 31st, 2011, from Newcastle, making him the most expensive British footballer ever and the eighth-most expensive player in football history.
It didn’t quite work out for the striker, though, and he moved to West Ham. After that, he had another stint at Newcastle in the Covid-19 era, which was followed by his first drop to the Championship since the Magpies promoted him 12 years earlier.
Carroll played with West Brom from 2021 to 2022, making 15 appearances and scoring three goals for the Baggies. Carroll is currently a player for Amiens in the French second tier, which is currently third in Ligue 2. Quite a strange action…
Saido Berahino
One of the most frequently used names for players with untapped talent is Berahino. In just two seasons between the ages of 20 and 21, Berahino—who graduated from West Brom’s academy—scored 19 goals, drawing interest from some of the best Premier League clubs.
But after moving to Stoke City, where he only scored three goals in 51 league games and was subsequently relegated, he developed a bad attitude and had a precipitous decline. He became one of England’s worst failure stories.
The 30-year-old star, who was born in Burundi, currently plays for AEL Limassol. Where did everything go wrong is the key question.
Kenneth Zohore
Another player who never made it at West Brom is Kenneth Zohore.
He joined Cardiff in 2016 at the age of 22, where he immediately became a success, scoring 21 goals in 65 matches to help the team advance to the Premiership. He quickly secured a position at West Brom after finding it difficult to make it in the top division.
He was dismissed at the end of the previous season after only 19 league games and three goals over four seasons. He then joined Slask Wroclaw, where he currently plays with former Manchester United player Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.
