West Ham’s Nikola Vlasic was in tears during the Hammers’ Premier League match against Burnley after an innocuous challenge on Ashley Westwood resulted in the Clarets’ star having lengthy treatment for a horrific injury.

The event occurred 22 minutes into a top-flight match at the London Stadium, and those on the pitch were obviously shaken.

Westwood, who will now face a lengthy recovery period, was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher as Vlasic was consoled by players from both teams before the two teams played out a 1-1 draw.

What became of Ashley Westood?
Westwood grabbed a loose ball in the middle of the pitch, but a clumsy touch allowed Vlasic to gain possession.

The Burnley midfielder threw out a leg to poke the ball wide, but was slammed into by a returning Hammers attacker who had no intention of hurting him.

Westwood’s right leg became stuck beneath him as it bore the full weight of Vlasic’s fall over his opponent.

With medical personnel being waved onto the field, it was immediately clear that something serious had occurred.

After 10 minutes of treatment, Westwood departed to a standing ovation from both sets of supporters.

Vlasic sunk to his knees as the severity of the injury dawned on everybody in attendance, with Hammers captain Declan Rice among those to offer words of comfort to colleague experiencing pain of his own.

What has Burnley said about Westwood’s injury?
When asked for an update on Westwood after Burnley’s 1-1 draw, interim manager Mike Jackson told reporters: “He’s gone to hospital and we’re waiting for an update.” We hope he is okay; our thoughts are with him.

“You could tell it wasn’t good by the players’ reactions.” He appeared distressed, but his fingers were crossed.

“When you see Declan Rice walk over and say it’s not good, you know it’s not. The youngster put up his hand, and he doesn’t usually go down.

“It could be the end of his season, but there is a squad here ready to play. Josh Brownhill came in and has done really well.”
