Villa’s record purchase Wesley described sobbing after realising the magnitude of the injury that ended his debut Premier League season.
Torn knee ligaments sustained in a 2-1 win over Burnley on New Year’s Day ended the striker’s season. Wesley, who scored five times in the top league for Villa after a big money deal from Club Brugge, is now on the mend in his native Brazil.
However, he confesses that the days following his injury, when he underwent surgery, were very difficult.
“I didn’t even want to know the severity,” Wesley told the Brazilian website globo esporte. I was having a terrific time, scoring goals, and I didn’t want to know.
“The doctor informed me that I had broken my ligaments.” Every day, I cried, afraid I’d never play again. But my family was there for me.”
Though the Premier League season has been extended due to the coronavirus, Wesley will not be able to play for Villa until next season – whenever that may be – after being removed from the club’s official top-flight roster.
His injury was caused by a violent challenge by Burnley defender Ben Mee. Wesley said that the Clarets centre-back has tried to contact him subsequently to apologise.
“He (Mee) did text me but I never actually received it!” he said. “I had changed the number and couldn’t see the message.”
