Newcastle United’s disallowed goal is one of the three worst VAR rulings in history, along with Everton’s gaffe.

Newcastle United were restricted to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace on Saturday, although they felt a goal was incorrectly disallowed.
Many players, managers, analysts, and past officials have chastised Michael Salisbury for overturning Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal after VAR intervention.

The goal was disallowed due to a foul by Joe Willock on Palace custodian Vicente Guaita, despite the Newcastle player being nudged prior.

After a review of every controversial decision made utilising the system since its introduction for the 2019-20 season, the judgement has been dubbed “one of the worst VAR calls ever in the Premier League.”

The Daily Star put Newcastle’s disallowed goal against Crystal Palace third among the top ten worst VAR rulings in the Premier League.

The use of VAR was called a ‘blunder’ since it appeared to ignore the fact that Mitchell bumped Willock into Guaita.

The disallowed goal by West Bromwich Albion against Southampton in 2021 was listed second because an offside call was made against Mbaye Diagne despite the player obviously being onside.

The Premier League’s ‘worst’ VAR call occurred earlier this year, when Everton were denied a straightforward penalty against Manchester City when Rodri seemed to handle the ball inside the area. A VAR assessment revealed that the ball struck the midfielder’s arm midway up, but no handball was called.

Another contentious VAR decision over the weekend saw West Ham denied a late equaliser against Chelsea. Maxwel Cornet scored before VAR gave Chelsea a free kick after Jarrod Bowen leaped over custodian Edouard Mendy.
