On the day of the deadline, Tom Cannon moved from Everton, but it appears that his debut will still be a long off.
Despite suffering their first loss against Hull just before the break, Leicester City’s start to the 2023–24 Championship season has been excellent.
Liam Rosenior’s team defeated the Tigers 1-0 to hand Enzo Maresca his first loss as head coach; the Foxes had won their previous four league games by a single goal.
The Italian team is still coming together, though, since a number of senior players left, including James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Youri Tielemans, and Caglar Soyuncu. since a result, Leicester made a lot of transfers throughout the course of the summer, which was greatly required.
The first-team roster was bolstered by Maresca and sports director Jon Rudkin using a combination of younger players in the mould of Cesare Casadei and Abdul Issahaku Fatawu and players with established experience like Harry Winks and Conor Coady.
When Leicester unexpectedly entered the contest to recruit Everton’s hotshot Tom Cannon on transfer deadline day, they won the race to sign the Republic of Ireland youth international after his eight-goal season for Preston North End on loan last season. This was Leicester’s final piece of business.
The 20-year-old is thought to have cost the Foxes approximately £7.5 million, including any potential add-ons, but it seems that the mysterious City injury curse has already befallen him.
Cannon’s weekend absence from the pitch was only briefly revealed by Maresca, but it does not appear like he will return any time soon.
According to LeicestershireLive’s blog (September 14, 11:13am), Maresca informed the media during the Southampton pre-game press conference that Tom Cannon was “out with some problems.”
“I’m not sure how long Cannon will be out.”
Cannon suffered a hamstring injury during preseason for Everton, which initially caused a delay in his loan departure earlier in the transfer window. However, by the end of August, he had fully healed and made a brief appearance for the Toffees in the Premier League against Wolves.
Due to Jamie Vardy’s advanced years and Kelechi Iheanacho’s inability to break his league duck thus far this season, Cannon may have had a fair chance of being inserted right into the starting lineup if he had been healthy.
Iheanacho has been starting recently, and despite interest from multiple teams, the Nigerian international is still playing at the King Power Stadium.
Iheanacho brings Premier League experience to a lower level, and you’d think that he would be among the goals on a regular basis this season for Leicester. However, despite playing in five Championship games and scoring against Burton Albion in the EFL Cup, he has yet to score under Maresca.
Patson Daka is another player to take into account. He has only been a part of two matchday squads in all competitions thus far, and he was predicted to leave on the deadline day earlier this month.
The Zambian, though, had deals with both AC Milan and Bournemouth fall through, so Maresca will now have him as a choice until he departs for the African Cup of Nations in January.
