Ex-Premier League star who cost £23m in transfer fees scores huge first Wrexham goal

Steven Fletcher, a former Wolves and Sunderland striker, scored his first goal for Wrexham at the ideal time to help the Welsh team earn a thrilling draw.

A former Premier League STAR who cost £23 million in transfer fees scored his first Wrexham goal at the ideal time.

After being released by Dundee United at the conclusion of the previous campaign, Steven Fletcher, 36, joined the recently promoted League Two team on a free transfer in early September. Before joining the ambitious north Wales club, Fletcher played for teams like Wolves, Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, and Stoke earlier in his career.

The Scot had to wait for his first Dragons goal after starting off the bench in each of his first three games. For the home game against Crewe, he once more sat on the bench.

With 14 minutes left in regulation, Fletcher was introduced with his team down 3-2 and having played with 10 men since the 36th minute after Ryan Barnett’s dismissal. Before Fletcher’s magnificent diving header to tie the score at 3-3 in the fifth minute of extra time, Wrexham appeared to be doomed despite their heroic efforts.

Phil Parkinson, the manager of Wrexham, announced that the team would appeal Barnett’s dismissal for a late challenge on Shilow Tracey.

The boys had “immense character,” according to Parkinson. “I believed that we were the superior team and had some excellent opportunities in the second half. Given that we had 10 men, it would have been unfair for us to have won if we hadn’t received the draw, therefore I’m truly disappointed that we lost.

“It was a fun game with lots of discussion topics. I would still have been pleased with how the boys played tonight even if we hadn’t scored that goal.

Dear visitor, Following the spectacular takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at the Welsh club, Wrexham is returning to show you inside the club’s workings.

Disney+ is now available as a three-month subscription in the UK for new and recurring customers for £1.99/month.

Paul Mullin, a teammate of Fletcher’s up front, scored two additional goals for Wrexham either side of halftime, and Parkinson lauded him as well. Mullin performed after a family member passed away. He continued, “I’m happy for him since it’s been a difficult week with a family bereavement. There aren’t many players at this level who would generate moments like that, and with the two goals, he was really hitting it out of the park.

“The decision to dismiss was a very bad one. Never was there a send-off. The fourth representative gave it. The player was not in danger because it was a low-level task. We will immediately appeal that.
