Alan Shearer now thinks £28m Aston Villa player could play

Now, according to Alan Shearer, a £28 million Aston Villa player could suit up for virtually any Premier League team.
Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, according to Alan Shearer, is capable of starting for practically any Premier League team.

Shearer was praising Watkins on the “The Rest Is Football” podcast along with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards.

Watkins’ weekend performance against Brighton Hove Albion, in which he scored three goals and provided two assists, earned him the acclaim.

Shearer also found himself visualising the striker in relation to England.

“I do, I like him [Ollie Watkins], 85% of the Premier League clubs would love to have him in their team,” he responded.

I don’t believe that our nation is now endowed with that many top-tier center-forwards.

Of course, some supporters might even be perplexed as to which teams Ollie Watkins wouldn’t start for.

The idea that a player may struggle at Manchester City is not meant as an insult, but it’s difficult to imagine a situation in which the striker would be kept on the bench.

Fans may now think that Watkins’ next challenge will be to maintain a higher level of consistency, as Shearer says Southgate should put Villa’s Watkins back on his radar.

The 27-year-old does appear to experience hot and cold phases in his performance, something he undoubtedly wants to change.

As a result of Shearer’s claim that Southgate should put Villa’s Watkins back on his radar, fans may now believe that Watkins’ next challenge will be to maintain a higher level of consistency.

The 27-year-old’s performance does appear to go through hot and cold spells, something he surely wants to address.

Watkins might have been miffed because Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal was chosen over him in the previous England team.

However, as Shearer’s praise indicates, Watkins, who cost £28 million, is currently back at the peak of his game at Villa.
