‘Opportunity’: Matt Hobbs discusses whether the Wolves will be able to sign new players in January.
Matt Hobbs has spoken about whether Wolves would be able to spend money on new players in January after making a large profit in the summer window.
Wanderers fans will not soon forget the 2023 summer window.
Many high-profile players left Molineux during the transfer window, as did Julen Lopetegui, a top-tier coach the club had long sought.
Lopetegui quit because he was dissatisfied with the club’s financial predicament.
Wolves needed to make a substantial profit in order to stay within profit and sustainability guidelines.
In the end, the club made approximately £145 million in sales.
The January transfer market will open in a few months, but will the Wolves spend? Hobbs, the sporting director, has responded…
According to Matt Hobbs, the Wolves could sign players if the situation is good.
Some have speculated that the club is now a little more free as a result of all those sales.
So it appears that there will be some money to spend.
Hobbs, on the other hand, has warned that trades would only be made if they are necessary and the appropriate type of player is involved.
“Not many clubs do business in January anymore,” he noted on Wolves Weekly. In general, if you do a lot of business in January, as we did last year, you’re in trouble. And you have a lot to fix.
“It always comes back to the right player.” I believe that now that we’ve dealt with what we dealt with over the summer, it’ll simply be a matter of finding the perfect guy. If the right player is available at the appropriate price, there is opportunity.
“If the right player is there for the right price and I believe it’s the right value, then yes we probably would have the ability to do something.”
Hobbs then stated that he occasionally receives transfer links from his team via social media for players that Wolves have never even explored.
He attributes this to agents putting information about there.
Encouragement for probable January activity
So it appears that Wolves’ dire financial situation from the summer has improved.
Hobbs believes the Wolves will be able to do something if the right player is available at the right price.
However, it is evident that the aim is not to spend. Just in case something comes up.
Clubs rarely conduct business in January today, and if Wolves do act in the next window, it may only be one or two new faces.
But the potential appears to be there.
