JUST NOW: Celtic are concerned about Penfull’s injuries…..

Evan Ferguson is expected to lead Ireland’s line in the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers despite missing the previous month’s defeats to France and the Netherlands due to injury.

The 18-year-old had been sidelined by sickness in recent weeks, but he made a 45-minute cameo in Brighton & Hove Albion’s 6-1 thrashing of Aston Villa on Saturday.

Stephen Kenny’s side’s faint hopes of reaching the finals in Germany require victories over Greece at home on Friday, October 13th, and Gibraltar in Faro, Portugal three days later.

Ferguson is joined in the team by Mikey Johnstone and Liam Scales of Celtic, the latter of whom is set to make his debut after impressing in the Champions League group stages.

Sheffield United defender John Egan, who captained the team against France, and Liverpool custodian Caoimhn Kelleher are both injured.

Wrexham’s James McClean is also missing after announcing his intention to retire from international football, with his final game to be against New Zealand next month.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton), Mark Travers (Stoke City, on loan from AFC Bournemouth), and Max O’Leary (Bristol City) are the goalkeepers.

Festy Ebosele (Udinese), Nathan Collins (Brentford), Shane Duffy (Norwich City), Dara O’Shea (Burnley), Andrew Omobamidele (Nottingham Forest), Liam Scales (Celtic), Ryan Manning (Southampton) are the defenders.

Josh Cullen (Burnley), Jayson Molumby (West Bromwich Albion), Alan Browne (Preston North End), Will Smallbone (Southampton), Jason Knight (Bristol City), Jamie McGrath (Aberdeen), and Mark Sykes (Bristol City) are the midfielders.

Evan Ferguson (Brighton and Hove Albion), Adam Idah (Norwich City), Aaron Connolly (Hull City), Chiedozie Ogbene (Luton Town), Callum Robinson (Cardiff City), and Mikey Johnston (Celtic) are the forwards.
