Green Bay, Wisconsin (AP) – The Green Bay Packers’ preseason game against New England was called off early Saturday night when Patriots rookie cornerback Isaiah Bolden was taken off the field in the fourth quarter.
After the game, the Patriots stated that Bolden had sensation in all of his extremities. According to Patriots spokesman Stacey James, Bolden will be hospitalized overnight at a hospital in Green Bay for observation. Sunday morning, the Patriots expect to release an update on Bolden’s condition.
“We’re just keeping our fingers crossed,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said.
The incident occurred more than seven months after Damar Hamlin, a Buffalo Bills safety, collapsed and was resuscitated on the field following what appeared to be a normal play.
Bolden, a seventh-round pick out of Jackson State, seemed to clash with teammate Calvin Munson while attempting to make a hit on a Packers pass complete to Malik Heath.
As medical personnel treated Bolden, both teams abandoned their respective sidelines and took to the field, with several players kneeling.
Following Bolden’s removal from the field, the two teams convened and agreed not to finish the game. The game was called with 10:29 remaining in the fourth quarter, and the Patriots ahead 21-17. Both teams have a 1-0 record.
CARDINALS 10, CHIEFS 38
(AP) GLENDALE, Ariz. Patrick Mahomes saw his first prolonged preseason action, throwing for 105 yards and a touchdown as Kansas City defeated Arizona.
The defending Super Bowl champions’ MVP completed 10 of 15 passes while playing the whole first quarter.
Despite a couple missed passes and penalties, the Chiefs’ first-team offense struggled over its opening two drives. Kansas City, on its third attempt, found the end zone when Mahomes rolled out to his right and hit Justin Watson for an 18-yard touchdown strike for a 7-0 lead.
Rashee Rice, a second-round pick out of SMU, caught eight catches for 96 yards.
Kansas City (1-1) is predicted to be among the best teams in the NFL again this year, while Arizona (1-1) is widely expected to be among the worst. Kyler Murray, the franchise quarterback, is expected to miss the first few weeks.
TEXANS 3, DOLPHINS 28
HOUSTON, Texas (AP) – Tua Tagovailoa threw an interception on Miami’s opening preseason play against Houston. His second drive was much more successful.
Tagovailoa led a 14-play, 93-yard drive capped by a 2-yard scoring run by Raheem Mostert to give the Dolphins an early lead in a 28-3 victory in his first game since suffering a concussion on Christmas Day.
After that, Tagovailoa sat, finishing the day 5 of 7 for 61 yards for the Dolphins (1-1).
C.J. Stroud of Houston was much crisper than he was in his NFL debut last week, when he was intercepted on his first possession and finished with 13 yards passing on two drives. Taking part in the entire first half
JETS 6, BUCCANEERS 13
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (AP) – Baker Mayfield may have won the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ starting quarterback job without even taking a snap in the Buccaneers’ preseason win against New York.
Mayfield was held out and sat on the bench during Tampa Bay’s second preseason game, possibly indicating that he has surpassed Kyle Trask in the fight to start the season as quarterback.
Trask, who was listed as the Buccaneers’ unofficial starter with Mayfield, led two touchdown drives that gave Tampa Bay (1-1) a 10-6 halftime lead.
In the first half, the third-year quarterback completed 16 of 23 passes for 122 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown pass to rookie Trey Palmer. He had to re-enter the game with 1:03 remaining.
Zach Wilson started for New York (1-2) and played the first half as he continues to gain preseason work as Aaron Rodgers’ backup.
BRONCOS 21, 49ERS 20
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Brock Purdy and Russell Wilson led his teams to field goals on their only drives of the game, and San Francisco upset Denver on the final play with a field goal by rookie Jake Moody.
