Despite discussions on a hugely lucrative Saudi Pro League agreement, the Belgian manager has emerged as one of the favorites for the vacant Ibrox seat.
The Saudi Pro League and Philippe Clement are “close” to an agreement, according to Al-Shabab insider Abdul Rahman Al-Hamidi, despite the manager’s ascent to the top spot at Ibrox.
The 49-year-old manager is one of the front-runners to succeed Michael Beale as Scottish Premiership manager, while Kevin Muscat is also widely expected to leave Yokohama F Marinos and take the helm of the Light Blues once more. Al-Hamidi insists that club officials at Shabab believe the Belgian manager is more interested in a move to Rangers than a lucrative offer from the Middle East, despite reports to the contrary.
According to rumors, Clement visited Riyadh over the weekend to look over the club’s facilities and speak with club officials. The former manager of Club Brugge, who was dismissed by Monaco the previous season, is considering his next course of action. Al-Hamidi also stated that the two parties were “close to reaching an agreement” in a speech for the Saudi sports television program Bara 18.
He specifically avoided discussing a transfer to Rangers, despite growing rumors that Ibrox board member and chief executive James Bisgrove are considering Clement. The self-assured commentator stated: “Al-Shabab’s negotiations with the Belgian coach may be in their final stages to train the first football team.”
