After barely three minutes, starting prop Shaun Fensom was forced to leave the game with an appalling injury, severely jeopardizing North Queensland’s chances of defeating Melbourne in the grand final.
After the incident, Cowboys hooker Jake Granville dragged Storm prop Jesse Bromwich down short of the line, causing him to lose the ball.
Cowboys coach Paul Green stated, “From what I’ve heard, he’s got a broken leg.”
“After three minutes, being down a man puts a lot of pressure on you.
“There are now 16 men left and 7 interchanges. You are under a lot of pressure because of that.
Fensom immediately alerted the trainer to his situation and requested quick care on the ground for an ankle injury.
Gavin Cooper, the Cowboys’ captain, comforted him as he was carried off the field by a medicab and placed on a stretcher.
Fensom, who moved from Canberra to North Queensland this season, had been waiting nine years to participate in an NRL grand final. It was a brutal blow to him.
When he was being brought off the field, he gave the thumbs up to the crowd to let his loved ones and supporters know he was okay. Matt Scott and Johnathan Thurston, two injured players, smiled in the coaching box.
