Following the discovery of a severe ankle sprain in rookie running back Dameon Pierce, the Houston Texans will be without what is likely their best offensive player for up to three weeks.
The Texans’ starting running back since Week 2 is Pierce, a fourth-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, who also leads all rookies with 939 rushing yards in 13 games.
He has also played a significant role in his team’s passing game, as evidenced by the fact that he has made the second-most receptions of any rookie running back (with 30) behind only Rachaad White of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (40 catches).
In the fourth quarter of the Texans’ close 27-23 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Pierce uncomfortably twisted his ankle.
According to ESPN, he will be out “up to three weeks,” which would not finish the season, but he very well could be sidelined during that time.
Pierce has been very good, but the Texans still have the worst record in the league (1-11-1) and are now projected to have the first choice in next year’s draft, a spot they would prefer to keep.
With only four games left in the current season, it is unclear if the Texans will bring Pierce back for the last game as the timetable may allow. Pierce has already done enough to guarantee his spot as Week 1 starter next season.
