Following the latest casualty of their injury curse this week, goalkeeper Adam Davies, Sheffield United now has fitness worries for over a dozen of their players. Prior to the Blades’ upcoming match against Manchester United, Davies was returned to United from the Wales team for a medical evaluation.
Any severe difficulty for Davies would compel United to register Marcus Dewhurst as an emergency goalkeeper and insert him into the matchday squad against Erik ten Hag’s Premier League giants because fellow stopper Jordan Amissah is also injured. Three additional injuries in the space of a week have further drained United’s already-scarce resources, leaving manager Paul Heckingbottom to ponder who he might have angered to bring on such bad luck.
The 12 players who are now out or questionable for the Red Devils encounter are listed here, with two of them still working their way back to fitness and not yet ready to start a crucial Premier League match.
After his horrific ordeal at Fulham last weekend, faces the longest recovery period of any injured United player. Basham has already undergone two operations, the first of which involved the insertion of a metal plate at the location of his severe fracture and the healing of his ligament damage. In a recent update from his hospital bed in London, he stated that he is “trying to stay positive,” and that he will soon return home to start the drawn-out rehabilitation process. The United captain will be sidelined for months due to yet another bizarre landing injury, this one occurring earlier this month when playing away at West Ham. It didn’t look good when he cautiously limped off the field while being accompanied by a physio, and he was subsequently seen exiting the London Stadium on crutches. Egan had suffered with knee and ankle problems earlier in the season, and his absence would be felt greatly, according to manager Heckingbottom, who has neglected to specify the nature of the problem.
Heckingbottom lost a third player to injury in a week, leaving him to wonder who he had offended in a previous life. The former Everton player took some time to adjust after arriving on a free following preseason without a club, put on his best performance in a Blades uniform away at West Ham, and then tore a muscle in training, just like Egan, and will be sidelined for months.
