The 32,000-person SCG crowd quieted down a bit on Saturday after Melbourne fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen was taken out in a horrific crash.
The rookie No. 1 and teammate Kenny Bromwich clashed as they both tried in vain to prevent James Tedesco from scoring a try in the closing moments of the preliminary final showdown.
When Papenhuyzen’s chin was struck by Bromwich’s head, he immediately passed unconscious and appeared to start convulsing on the ground.

Additionally, the impact split his chin open, and it was heavily bleeding.
Both clubs’ medical staff attended to the player as the others waited to see how he was doing.
Fortunately, Papenhuyzen was able to leave the field on foot.
In what was a ferocious and physically taxing match between two NRL heavyweights, it added to a terrible night for injuries.
