SOCKING NEWS: Newcastle Falcons hero retires through neck injury aged 24……

At the age of 24, Newcastle Falcons prop Scott Wilson has had to give up rugby due to a neck injury.

Wilson was hurt in the Falcons’ Premiership semi-final loss to Exeter in May, and a doctor has advised him to retire.

After graduating from Newcastle’s academy, he made 80 appearances for them. He was 18 years old when he made his debut.

Rugby director Dean Richards stated, “It’s a great sorrow for him to have to retire at such a young age.

But from Scott’s perspective, there is a wider picture to take into account when it comes to his long-term health. When he told the rest of the group, it wasn’t a simple situation.

At the age of 15, Wilson joined Newcastle, assisting them in their 2012–13 promotion from the Championship.

Before assisting Falcons in making their first-ever Premiership Playoff appearance last season, he played for the backup England Saxons team.

Wilson told the team website, “I’ve been playing rugby since I was six, and I’ve always wanted to play for Newcastle Falcons.

“The doctor has now informed me that I must retire, which is clearly a great blow.

“One thing I do know is that I’ll always be a Newcastle Falcons fan, and I’ll be here in the stands at Kingston Park cheering on the lads like I used to do when I was a kid.”
