The Arizona Cardinals’ story under Bruce Arians is well known.

They felt that they were injuries away from a Super Bowl berth in 2014.

In 2017, however, they also had to contend with a significant number of injuries.

Injuries destroyed two of the Cardinals’ top nine seasons in the previous ten years, 2014 and 2017.

WAR-Adjusted Injuries Lost (WAIL) is useful in this situation. WAIL calculates the Wins Above Replacement (WAR) lost due to injury based on a player’s status on the injury report using each player’s predicted WAR for each game of the season.
In 2014, missing Tyrann Mathieu and Carson Palmer may have meant the difference between being the one seed, having a bye week, and competing in the Super Bowl.

The Cardinals’ ability to make the playoffs in 2017 was largely a result of Palmer’s absence for the majority of the season.

Even while it is still impossible to demonstrate that those injuries were to blame for the Cardinals’ lost seasons, it is a bitter fact that we always knew and now have some skewed confirmation of.
