INDIA PARK, IN (AP) — Due to rib injuries, Nick Foles will miss the Indianapolis Colts’ season finale versus Houston. Sam Ehlinger, a second-year quarterback, will start in Nick Foles’ place.
Jeff Saturday, the interim coach, announced the news on Monday.
Saturday reported, “Nick’s whole side of his body hurts.” He obviously made a huge shot there. He landed on the ball, but it hurt a lot, and this week he will be out.
The 38-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday ended with Foles hurt during a sack by rookie linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux late in the first half.
A few feet away, Thibodeaux rejoiced by making snow angels on the field while Foles writhed in agony. Eventually, after going 8 of 13 for 81 yards and one interception that was returned for a touchdown, Foles left the field, was wheeled to the locker room, and did not come back.
Conversely, Thibodeaux later clarified that he was unaware of Foles’ injuries.
Nevertheless, Saturday referred to the festivities as “trash” and promised to discuss with his players how they should respond if they occurred again. Teammates of Foles did nothing as the unsettling incident unfolded.
“We guard the ones we own. Saturday stated, “I’m simply going to walk carefully and that’s where I’ll leave it. “We’ll talk about that later.”
This season, Indy (4-12-1) will make four quarterback changes.
Prior to benching the 37-year-old, turnover-prone veteran in favor of Ehlinger, former coach Frank Reich started Matt Ryan in each of the first seven games.
Before Reich was fired, the former Texas star started the next two games and lost both of them.
Ryan took over in early November after Saturday took over, and although he never appeared fully healed from a throwing shoulder ailment, Ryan made five more starts.
This led Saturday to start the 11-year veteran Nick Foles against the Los Angeles Chargers last week. However, following a career-high seven interceptions during his first start in precisely one year, Foles sustained an injury on Sunday, and Ehlinger will now take his place.
“Our guy is going to be Sam.” Saturday expressed satisfaction with the manner he performed yesterday. “He wasn’t flawless, but he had good intensity and moved the ball well around the field. To keep him safe for this week, we left at the conclusion. Thus, Sam will lead this week with Matt providing support.
After leading the Philadelphia Eagles to their first global title in the Super Bowl era in 2017, the 33-year-old Foles was named the game’s MVP.
Along with Drew Brees, Foles and Ehlinger attended Austin Westlake High School in Texas. Foles graduated in 2007, Brees in 1997, and Ehlinger in 2017.
