Ilia Gruev, who played for Werder Bremen in Germany, was included to the Bulgarian squad in September 2022. However, since then, the Leeds United player’s performance with his national team has been dreadful.
The 24-year-old Gruev earned his debut for Bulgaria at the start of the previous campaign, right after his breakout Bundesliga season with Werder. He won 5-1 to get off to a great start against Gibraltar.
His three caps were victories. Gruev, though, has started Bulgaria’s last 12 games, including friendlies and qualifying, and he hasn’t been able to halt the decline. Albania defeated Bulgaria 2-0 last night with ease.
Nine games have passed without a victory thus far, with six of those defeats occurring in Bulgaria’s last four matches. Gruev is having trouble finding the resources to make the necessary changes at the moment.
Leeds player Gruev failed to stop yesterday night’s miserable Bulgaria run
The £4 million summer acquisition from Bulgaria has yet to make his Leeds debut, and Gruev’s lack of form barely gives him the opportunity to convince Daniel Farke that he deserves a larger role in the starting lineup.
Bulgaria’s performance in European qualifying encapsulates their current terrible form. Within Group E, they occupy the bottom spot among five nations. Just two wins out of six games. In front of them are Montenegro and Lithuania.
It is imperative that something swiftly shift for Bulgaria and Gruev. Now, as Farke gets his team ready to play his former team, Norwich, on Saturday at Carrow Road, the left-footed midfielder will make his way back to Elland Road.
