There is a lot about this football team that we will discover this Saturday when the USF Bulls visit East Hartford. It’s clear that problems have started to arise after the team’s impressive run of winning two straight conference games and holding Alabama to a close game. On Saturday, what USF will be on display?
The running-backs room is the best position on the team, which is something else we heard all the time during the offseason. Although there has been some excellent output from the room, it doesn’t seem to be consistent at all. There have been moments when the running game seems to be really clicking, and we haven’t utilized it to its full potential. especially in light of the FAMU match. I know a lot of us have wondered where the speed is in the running-back room, and it appears that the explosive rushing game is lacking as well. Byrum is undoubtedly excellent with the ball in his hands, but you would prefer to see a running back in that area step up and take command. This season, one thing that has become evident is that the offensive team’s real ball movement has come from the explosive plays. Deep passing plays have accounted for the majority of these plays. Until now, we haven’t really seen consistency in the offense. Running the ball, moving the ball on first downs, and mostly failing to have a short passing game all play a part in this. Sean Atkins has been the beneficiary of a few significant short passing plays on fourth downs, but they don’t appear to be very frequent. Additionally, we haven’t seen a lot of running back or tight end use in the passing game. I see explosive plays and a quarterback in this offense.
Poor tackling has been a consistent theme this season up until this point. Early in the season, it was really difficult to tell that we were applying pressure to quarterbacks and getting into the backfield on a fairly regular basis. This, in my opinion, was actually hiding the tackling problems. I believe that since then, the opposition teams have realized that the defense’s main concern is tackling. Teams have figured out a way to take advantage of it, which is to throw a crossing route or run to the perimeter to force a safety or linebacker to make an open field tackle. In most cases, they aren’t.
