The team stated, “Poe ruffled some feathers last night during his Mascot Classic and took some damage to his drumstick.”
The game of football can be violent. So vicious, in fact, that injuries can occur to the mascots as well.
During halftime of Baltimore’s preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, the team’s mascot, Poe, was hurt while playing football with children. In the end, a cart carrying the mascot was removed from the field.
Poe—named for Edgar Allan Poe, the author of “The Raven”—stayed on the field for roughly five minutes, and the incident almost caused the second half to start later than planned. According to ESPN, a substitute Poe took over at the game after the mascot left the field.
The Ravens informed supporters on Sunday that Poe was doing well.
On Twitter, the team posted a picture of Poe sitting on a couch with an ice pack on its left knee along with the message, “Thanks for all your concerned tweets.”
During his Mascot Classic last night, Poe suffered some damage to his drumstick and raised some eyebrows. Poe is waiting for more test results while comfortably perched in his perch. We’ll keep you updated on his condition.
Head coach of the Ravens, John Harbaugh, made light of the situation after the game.
He informed reporters, “No updates on that.” “I’m sure there will be an MRI tomorrow.”
With a 17–15 victory, the Ravens won the game, their 23rd straight preseason triumph. Poe will also have time to recuperate before Baltimore plays its first game of the regular season on September 11 against the New York Jets.
