Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo Returns to Practice Field
As the Silver and Black get ready to play the Detroit Lions, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo returned to the practice field following his absence from Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears due to a back injury. Before practice, Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels stated, “He’ll be out there.” If everything goes according to plan this week, McDaniels anticipates Garoppolo to play in Detroit on Monday night.
Wishful. Yes, provided that nothing goes in the opposite direction. We have high hopes that this will be the case. Garoppolo is back to guide an offense that has not performed well in the season’s first seven games. Garoppolo has more interceptions than touchdowns and is currently tied for the league lead after missing two games.
Against a formidable Lions defense that features one of the top defensive linemen in the NFL, the seasoned quarterback will attempt to get back on track.
“The [Lions’] defense, a very good rush. [Aidan] Hutchinson’s is a really good player, great effort,” McDaniels said. “Their front I think doesn’t get enough credit, there’s a lot of guys that are disruptive.” “Two linebackers, two safeties are their top tacklers, and they do a good job of flying to the ball. You can see the way that they play and they’re very opportunistic. They get their hands on a lot of footballs, a lot of PBU’s, a lot of opportunities for turnovers that they create.
Given the offensive weapons the Raiders possess and the advantages and disadvantages of Detroit’s defense, Monday night might be a good opportunity for Las Vegas’ offense to experiment, especially with the passing game. Although Detroit is only ranked 23rd in the NFL against the pass, Garoppolo will be playing against the second-best run defense in the league in his first game back. Rapid and accurate passes could help counter a strong pass rush and give Las Vegas more room to run.
Garoppolo’s play this season has rightfully been under a microscope. It will be up to him and the Raiders’ offense to snap out of the rut they have collectively been in this season. If Las Vegas’ offensive line can protect Garoppolo and he can successfully make the necessary plays, the Raiders will have a shot to pull off the upset in Detroit.
