Ahead of the match against Coventry City, Carlos Corberan speaks with the media about the latest West Bromwich Albion news from BirminghamLive.
Before Monday’s (8pm) trip to Coventry City, Carlos Corberan has provided an injury update on two West Bromwich Albion players: Semi Ajayi and Cedric Kipre.
After Kipre was substituted late in Albion’s 2-0 midweek victory over QPR, there was concern that the defender would be out for several months. Nevertheless, the scan results showed no serious injuries, so he might be ready for Monday’s game.
There is also Conor Townsend, who was unable to play against QPR due to illness. Ajayi’s ankle ligament injury means he won’t be able to participate in the event at the CBS Arena.

“We know we are in one period where the competition is a challenge because we are losing so many of the players,” Corberan said in a Friday afternoon media conference. Thankfully, the only positive thing that came out of the previous game was [Cedric] Kipre’s injury, which appeared to be a serious one. Fortunately, the scan revealed that Kipre’s pain was more severe than any serious injuries.
The initial assessment appeared to indicate a significant injury, but the scan gave us some peace of mind. Let’s see, there is only pain and no injury—it might just be irritation—and depending on how Kipre feels over the coming days, we may be able to play him, which is excellent news.
It’s a challenge, Semi [Ajayi], and I am in a similar situation with this (a “miracle” for Ajayi to be ready). He has grade two ligament [damage] in his ankle; this is a distinct kind of injury, and we must monitor his recovery. Despite his best efforts, he remains a significant question mark for the upcoming game.
Conor Townsend has rejoined the group after falling ill. Although I’m not sure if Kipre will be prepared, the fact that he will be spending the next week with the group is encouraging news.”
The Albion manager emphasized Kipre’s value to the team as well. “We never want to lose any players, and I think Cedric has been one with more minutes with the team, this is because he’s one player who can have a big contribution to what we want to do on the pitch,” Corberan said.
Since I don’t like losing any of our players, especially when it’s an action you can’t avoid, I must admit that I was upset after the game. Though we’re not sure if he’ll arrive on Monday, we got the scan results last night, and they were positive.
“The fact that the player appears to be experiencing only knee ligament irritation rather than an injury is encouraging because these kinds of injuries can occur anywhere from six weeks to three months to six months, so you never know.” We were unable to be optimistic after the initial assessment due to the pain.
“He worked in the pool yesterday, and he’s been working with the medical staff on minutes today. He can try training tomorrow if the response is satisfactory.
“If he trains he has options to play, if he doesn’t train he won’t play.”
