Before Saturday’s Merseyside Derby, Everton still has a few injury concerns, but they might be able to welcome back Seamus Coleman in the upcoming weeks. The defender hasn’t played since May due to a knee injury, but he’s finally making progress.
Coleman, the club captain of Everton, is past his prime at age 35. Still, he’s a club hero and when he comes back, he’ll bring a wealth of leadership and experience to the dressing room.
Sean Dyche provides an update on Seamus Coleman.
Coleman is out of the derby on Saturday, but manager Sean Dyche stated at the team’s pregame press conference that he might be able to play again soon.
“It’s the first time Seamus has been on the grass, but he’s only had one day, so he needs time, obviously, after being away for so long,” Dyche said.
“On the international front, we’re happy that many of the players have returned healthy and strong.”
Coleman’s age and fitness issues may make some people argue that he should not be a regular anymore, but the fact that the team is excited to have him back speaks volumes about the defender and the team.
Having someone as devoted to Everton as Coleman in the starting lineup will be very beneficial, as both Ashley Young and Nathan Patterson have struggled this season at right-back.
Coleman is a popular member of the team and was recently called “brilliant” by former teammate Conor Coady.
When things get tough, Everton will still turn to its injured veteran stars. Coleman will eventually leave the club, but they will need to have a suitable replacement for him, both on and off the field, because of Everton’s poor transfer market transactions.
