By appointing free agent punter Corey Bojorquez to a two-year contract on Monday, the Cleveland Browns addressed a critical need.

Bojorquez was with Green Bay for the previous season. On 53 punts, he averaged 46.5 yards, with a season-long 82-yarder for the Packers.

The 25-year-old is accustomed to the windy conditions he’ll probably encounter during home games in Cleveland, having spent three years with Buffalo as well.

Bojorquez had the highest gross average in the NFL in 2020 (50.8 yards). He’s also had three punts blocked, one of which occurred during last season’s playoff loss for Green Bay to San Francisco.

After signing veteran Dustin Colquitt for the final few games of the previous season, the Browns released struggling punter Jamie Gillan.

With a punter now on the roster, the Browns will try to add a kicker. After a difficult 2021 season, they decided not to tender Chase McLaughlin as a free agent. Although the team has Chris Blewitt on the roster, they plan to add another player for depth and competition.

The previous season, Cleveland’s special teams performed poorly all around the field, as the Browns finished 8-9. By signing Pro Bowler Jakeem Grant to a three-year contract as a free agent this offseason, they did improve their return teams.

During the previous season, Grant averaged 11.9 yards on punt returns and 23.4 yards on kickoff returns for the Chicago Bears.

Myles Garrett and Dustin Hopkins both put on strong performances in the Browns’ 39-38 victory over the Colts, which led to the awards.

CHICAGO — In the wake of an incredible 39-38 triumph over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7, two Cleveland Browns are receiving national recognition for their achievements.

Myles Garrett won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week award, while Dustin Hopkins took home the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week title, according to an NFL announcement on Wednesday.

Garrett won the award following an incredible display of play on Sunday by the All-Pro defensive end. At Indianapolis, Garrett had nine stops, two sacks, two forced fumbles, one pass defensed, and one blocked field goal.

The Browns recovered both of Garrett’s forced fumbles, including one that was recovered in the end zone, for 14 points. In addition, a field goal by the Browns was made possible by Garrett’s blocked attempt.

His historic performance was just the fourth time in Browns history that a player had two forced fumbles and two sacks. Garrett had already done this in 2018, but it had also been done by Mark Word in 2002 and John Thierry in 1999.

At just 27 years old, Garrett achieved another significant career milestone on Sunday: 82 career sacks. With 80 sacks, Garrett eclipsed Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White, who had previously held the NFL record for the most sacks by a player before turning 28.

Hopkins is the recipient of the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award for the second week running.

In the Indianapolis victory, Hopkins converted all four field goals, including three that were longer than fifty yards. He also broke the NFL record on Sunday by making at least one field goal of fifty yards or more in five straight games. In addition, the veteran kicker made a career-long field goal of 58 yards, which is tied for the second-longest in Browns history.
