It is now evident that Teddy Bridgewater was also interested in signing with the Detroit Lions, as Dan Campbell never concealed.
On the eve of their joint practices with the New York Giants on Monday, the Lions signed Bridgewater as their new backup quarterback.
Bridgewater, 31, immediately improves a position the Lions have neglected for years. He was regarded as one of the top backup quarterbacks available this offseason.
In his nine-year career, Bridgewater is 33-32 as a starter. In his two starts with the Miami Dolphins last season, he completed 62% of his passes.
ADDITIONAL CHANGES: The Lions release former Pro Bowl player Jake McQuaide and retain long snapper Scott Daly.
While Campbell was an assistant with the team in 2018–19, he also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and New Orleans Saints.
Following Bridgewater’s summer visit to the Lions as a free agent, Campbell declared, “I don’t think I’ve hidden anything about my feelings for Teddy Bridgewater.” “So I’m all for it if we can bring competition into the room by adding a guy like Teddy.”
Last season, Nate Sudfeld was the Lions backup quarterback; however, he did not try to pass behind Jared Goff. This spring, Sudfeld agreed to a one-year contract with the Lions and participated in every second-team practice session during training camp.
According to Campbell, the Lions’ goal is to assemble as much talent and insurance as possible in anticipation of a lengthy postseason run. Sudfeld stated last week that the team has kept him updated on their interest in Bridgewater.
The truth is that, well, here we go, dude. You just want to know that you are in the best hands possible, and as we approach Year 3, I believe we are in a much better position,” Campbell remarked. “I’ll end it there. However, there is also the competition. If we take this path, it doesn’t mean Nate is out of ideas, and if it succeeds, you’ll know that the person who emerges from the fire will be the ideal one to support you during this difficult time. You do not want the wheels to come off, though.
Henson Hooker, a rookie selected in the third round, and Adrian Martinez, an undrafted rookie, are the other two quarterbacks on the Lions’ 91-man roster.
As he heals from a knee injury sustained in college, Hooker is listed as not expected to play in the preseason and is on the nonfootball injury list.
Throughout camp, Martinez has only worked with the third-team offense.
