Sheffield Wednesday were linked with a clutch of players who eventually didn’t sign in the summer, with one of them being Josh Onomah.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham man has had a tough couple of years.
Preston North End handed him a lifeline in the second half of last season but he didn’t take his chance, and the Lilywhites eventually released him.
Then it looked like Stoke City were about to give him a chance, and it seemed like it was a done deal, though the move obviously fell through as Onomah remains a free agent.
Sheffield Wednesday were linked in the summer but the Owls instead moved for midfielders John Buckley and Jeff Hendrick on deadline day; both of whom, Hendrick in particular, have been underwhelming.
Onomah remains a free agent…
After the close the summer transfer window, there’s often a rush to sign the remaining free agents, and it’s somewhat surprising to see Onomah still without a club.
The 26-year-old, who is reported to have earned £7.6million in his career, will no doubt have had offers, and with that much money in the bank, he may well fancy an early retirement.
But Onomah could feel like he still has a point to prove and given his pedigree in the Premier League and in the Championship with the likes of Fulham in the past, there’ll surely be second tier sides willing to take him on.
Last season, Preston boss Ryan Lowe hailed Onomah as ‘fantastic’ after a positive performance vs QPR.
A good fit for Sheffield Wednesday?
Despite Wednesday signing a horde of new players in the summer, they’re still lacking in almost every department.
Danny Rohl is certainly getting more out of the squad than his predecessor, but goals remain an issue with Wednesday having scored just seven in their opening 15 league games.
So someone like Onomah who has a track record of both scoring and creating goals, and who would add a definite degree of quality and physicality to the midfield could be ideal for the Owls.
The question remains Onomah’s current fitness levels, though. He wouldn’t be able to hit the ground running and so it could be a risk for Wednesday.
Still, Onomah could be a huge improvement on some of Wednesday’s current midfield options, so it could be one for the Owls to keep an eye on.
