The Houston Astros could be looking to move one of their promising outfielders during the offseason to bring back another valuable piece before the 2024 season.
It’s very likely that the Houston Astros will look almost identically to what their team was in 2023.
The starting rotation is expected to get some of their injured pieces back, the infield is set for the next couple years and their outfield will primarily look the same.
Their bullpen will probably be the only area that gets rebuilt after three players could hit free agency and they didn’t perform to their usual standard last year.
One player on the Astros could find himself on the way out this offseason to potentially upgrade other areas of the roster.
Houston is stacked in the outfield with Kyle Tucker, Yordan Alvarez, Chase McCormick, Mauricio Dubon and Jake Meyers all in the mix.
Tucker will be in right field everyday when healthy and Alvarez will rotate between left field and designated hitter.
That leaves the trio of McCormick, Dubon and Meyers fighting for playing time at center and left field when Alvarez isn’t in there.
Meyers found himself as the least preferred player in this trio towards the end of the year.
McCormick emerged as a star and Dubon’s defense got him onto the ALCS roster while Meyers was left off.
There’s a chance that the Astros could explore trades to get something in return for one of these players.
Meyers seemingly is the guy who would be moved.
“Meyers is 27 years old, has two minor-league option years remaining and won’t enter salary arbitration until next winter. The questions about his bat persist, but Meyers’ upside could be enticing to a team willing to play him every day — something Houston doesn’t seem inclined to do,” Chandler Rome of The Athletic wrote.
Houston could try to trade him and add the bullpen pieces they’re looking for heading into the 2024 season.
