The biggest game of the season for Penn State football ended in a loss to Michigan on Saturday. When it counted most, the Nittany Lions could not keep up with the Wolverines, scoring only 15 points in four quarters.
James Franklin’s chances of winning the big game are very slim in State College, and during his postgame press conference, he became very snarky with a reporter.
James Franklin was met with a chorus of criticism as he left the field just before his meeting with the media. As he entered the tunnel, he was surrounded by fans.Olaivavega Ioane, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, was not pleased with the remarks made by the spectators. He emerged from the tunnel again to chastise and slam them out for chirping his head coach.
Franklin then turned back to face the field to comfort his large offensive lineman. Eventually, they returned to the tunnel as a group, with Ioane wrapped in the head coach’s arm.
An ugly fan-player exchange capped off an ugly performance. Franklin seemed to appreciate that Ioane stood up for him. That doesn’t lessen how awkward the situation is at all. There are numerous issues that Penn State had with. The offense was the one that struggled the most, despite the defense letting Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards run all over them in the second half.
Penn State totaled just 238 yards and converted on just four of 14 third down attempts. Quarterback Drew Allar completed only 10 of his 22 passes for 70 yards.
The Nittany Lions’ offensive coordinator was fired on Sunday after the loss. Franklin’s job is not in jeopardy, but the fanbase was clearly frustrated by his team’s most recent performance. They were displeased.
