The Toronto Maple Leafs finally made it official on Tuesday, signing forward Noah Gregor to a one-year contract ahead of the start of the NHL season.
The deal for the 25-year-old is worth $775,000.
Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving confirmed the move to reporters at practice, and the club made an official announcement later that afternoon.
In another move, forward Bobby McMann was placed on waivers by the club, which will be hoping for the same luck it had when veteran goalie Martin Jones passed through on Monday.
Gregor came into Leafs camp on a Professional Tryout. In other words, no guarantee of a spot on the team. But the speedy forward’s performance impressed management, prompting the trade of Sam Lafferty (and his pricier $1.115-million salary) to the Canucks on the weekend.
Gregor, from Beaumont, Alta., spent the last four seasons with the San Jose Sharks, collecting 26 goals and 51 points in 178 games. He was not offered a qualifying offer by the Sharks GM Mike Grier at season’s end, making him an unrestricted free agent. He was drafted in the fourth round round by San Jose in 2016.
The six-foot, left-winger is expected to see time on the fourth line with centre David Kämpf and winger Ryan Reaves.
