Sad news: Maple Leafs star out of hospital

John Tavares’ hospital stay was brief.

The Maple Leafs announced on Friday morning that the star center had been released and is resting after suffering a scary injury Thursday night.

The Maple Leafs announced that Tavares is out indefinitely with what coach Sheldon Keefe described as a concussion.

“The love and support I’ve felt since last night cannot be put into words,” Tavares said in a statement on Friday. “I’m happy to report that I’m back home and recovering.” Thank you for being by my side, family, friends, teammates, the Maple Leafs organization, Leafs Nation, and the hockey community.

“I would also like to thank both medical teams, emergency services, and everyone at St. Mike’s Hospital for their exceptional care in getting me back on my feet.”

“I’m looking forward to wearing the Maple Leaf on my chest again.” Until then, I’ll be rooting for the boys and Leafs National in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.”

Tavares was motionless on the ice after taking an inadvertent knee to the head from Montreal forward Corey Perry in Toronto’s 1-0 loss to the Canadiens. He collapsed when he tried to sit up, and a stretcher was brought out for him.

“I honestly felt sick to my stomach when I saw it,” Perry explained to reporters. “When I saw him, it was a scary situation because of the way he is.” I’ll contact him and speak with him, and hopefully he’ll be fine.”

Toronto forward Auston Matthews told reporters Friday morning that Tavares’ teammates received a group text message from him saying he was feeling better.

“We’re going to be thinking about him every day,” said defenseman Morgan Rielly.
