Ghanaian MP apologizes to Harry Maguire

Man Utd star Harry Maguire was mocked in the Ghanaian parliament last year.

Harry Maguire has received an apology from Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo after the politician cruelly joked that the England star was the ‘biggest threat’ in the Manchester United defence. Adongo was engaging in a debate on the country’s budget when he compared vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia’s management of the economy to Maguire’s performances.

A year ago, Adongo was making the point that Maguire’s form had suffered a drastic collapse. At the time, the then-United captain was receiving a torrent of abuse and was struggling for form for club and country.

“Harry Maguire, he’s a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere, was seen as the best defender in the world

A year on, Adongo has apologised for his remarks. He said: “If you remember last year, I was very quick to compare my big brother, Mahamudu Bawumia, to Harry Maguire. I now apologise to Harry Maguire.

“I used the defender as an example. Today, Harry Maguire has turned a corner and is a transformational footballer. Mr Speaker, Maguire is now an important player for Manchester United. As for Maguire, he is now at the IMF (International Monetary Fund) with a cup in hand.”

Adongo was referencing the Ghanaian government requiring a £2.4billion ($3bn) loan from the IMF. soaring debt in the country has prompted criticism of vice-president Bawumia.

In December 2022, inflation in Ghana rose to a record 54 per cent. It has since fallen to 35 per cent.

Meanwhile, Maguire has enjoyed an upturn in his fortunes with United and England. The 30-year-old has forced his way back into Erik ten Hag’s starting 11 despite being stripped of the captaincy during the summer.

The former Leicester man was close to leaving Old Trafford ahead of the campaign. A switch to West Ham fell through only due to a failure for United and Maguire to agree to a compensation package.

Maguire now harbours hopes of starting for England at Euro 2024. He said after England’s 1-1 draw with Macedonia on Monday: “Playing for my country means everything, it’s a huge honour.

It’s what I dreamt of as a kid so every time there’s a game I want to be available, I want to play every minute, start every game and help the lads.

“It’s been a really successful six years for me since I made my debut, also for the team as well, but now we just need to get over the line.”
