Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips left the field in tears after suffering a heartbreaking Achilles tear during the 34-13 win over the New York Jets on Black Friday.
Phillips went down with a non-contact injury before being carted off the field while attempting to get out of his stance at the start of a play in the fourth quarter.
A replay of the injury appeared to show a reverberation up his calf, and Miami officially announced shortly after he was taken away that Phillips had indeed suffered an Achilles injury.
While he was down on the turf, the entire Dolphins bench rushed onto the field to surround him while he received immediate medical attention.
Amazon Prime’s TV cameras captured images of him sobbing into a towel as he was driven down the tunnel at MetLife Stadium after he was loaded onto the cart.
Phillips previously retired from the sport due to concussion issues while at UCLA, but returned to the field after transferring to the University of Miami.
The 24-year-old edge rusher was not the only Dolphins defender to sustain an injury, as safety Jevon Holland was ruled out with a knee injury.
Earlier in the game, Holland had returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown on a Hail Mary with only two seconds remaining in the first half.
