Indianapolis Colts key man battling with his life with serious career ending injury

Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has reportedly sustained a thumb injury that makes his status foggy for the final stretch of the 2023 regular season.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport has reported that Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor suffered a thumb injury that he played through in the second half of Sunday’s victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Rapoport posted on X: “#Colts RB Jonathan Taylor, fresh off a 91-yard, 2-TD performance in a win over the #Bucs, suffered an injured thumb that is requiring further evaluation and puts his status in doubt going forward, sources say.

More info coming, with all options considered. One to watch.”

This is the worst possible news for Shane Steichen and the Colts as they push for a playoff spot. Taylor recently returned after getting a contract extension in Week 5 to face off against the Tennessee Titans in a limited role.

However, this past Sunday, Taylor showed that he’s essentially back to being the bell-cow in the backfield. Unfortunately, sustaining this thumb injury could put his 2023 season in jeopardy if it’s serious.

While the Colts do have a solid runner in Zack Moss, it’s much preferred to keep both Taylor and Moss as a tandem with backup quarterback Gardner Minshew under center. Minshew, while reliable and serviceable, needs a solid ground game to operate at the highest efficiency.

Everyone will be keeping an eye on Taylor’s thumb injury and how severe it will be. If it sidelines him for more than a game or two, it might put the Colts’ playoff hopes in jeopardy with already so many injuries surrounding the roster this season.
