The 32-year-old played half a season for the Black Cats during their ill-fated 2017/18 campaign, scoring just twice before departing for Wigan Athletic.
And having endured a nomadic existence since, the striker finally seems to have found a home at Tranmere Rovers
Indeed, he has scored 21 times in 33 appearances this season and was set to lead the line at Wembley against his former club on March 14.
But having missed the Prenton Park outfit’s 1-0 defeat to Crawley on Saturday, manager Keith Hill confirmed that the striker would undergo surgery on a knee injury on Tuesday – ruling him out of the final.
It’s a blow for Tranmere, who have at times relied heavily upon his goal this term.
Pacy strike Kayne Woolery may start in his place next weekend.

Ben Tollitt hands Tranmere Rovers devastating injury blow
Rovers boss Mickey Mellon reveals midfielder will miss rest of season with knee injury
Tranmere Rovers’ promotion hopes have been dealt a major blow with the news Ben Tollitt has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Tollitt is set to undergo an operation on the knee injury that forced him off six minutes after the interval of Tuesday’s 2-1 National League win over Boreham Wood at Prenton Park.
The 22-year-old, who joined from Portsmouth this season, underwent scans to ascertain the extent of the damage and visited a specialist on Thursday.
And Rovers boss Micky Mellon said: “It’s not good. Tollitt is out for the season.
“Ben has a knee injury, and we are thinking he might need an operation very soon. He has been for a scan and saw the specialist and we’ll get the full extent of the injury, but at the minute it’s not looking good.
“It’s a huge disappointment for the boy. He’s been flying and playing terrific and looking every bit the player we believe we have brought here.”
