Why is Notre Dame offensive lineman leaving

The Boilermakers land a very talented transfer prospect.

Former Notre Dame offensive lineman Joey Tanona, a native of Zionsville (Ind.) High where he was an All-American, tells 247Sports he has committed to Purdue after entering the transfer portal on Dec. 4.

Tabbed by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 16 offensive tackle and No. 168 prospect overall in the 2022 class, Tanona was selected to play in the All-American Bowl following his senior season. He chose to play in South Bend over Ohio State and a slew of others.

Tanona will reunite with former Zionsville High teammate in Boilermakers offensive lineman Gus Hartwig.

“I chose Purdue because in every aspect it just felt right,” Tanona said. “I am a competitor and winning is an obsession, I want to compete against the best in the Big Ten, an offensive lineman’s dream. I know Purdue has the coaches and players to get it done and I want to be a part of that. Not to mention the opportunity to play with Gus again.”

Back in August 2022, Tanona medically retired from football following an offseason car crash, but he’s been clear to play and looks forward to doing so for Boilermakers.

LSU and Iowa were a couple other programs showing interest in Tanona after he entered the portal.
