The Cotton Bowl bid by Ohio State football results in significant coaching bonuses: Breakfast with Buckeyes
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State football fell one game short of its goal of winning the Big Ten Conference and returning to the College Football Playoff.
Instead, a Cotton Bowl appearance against Missouri will serve as a bridge between those goals and those that will be established for next season. Even so, coach Ryan Day and his 10-man on-field assistant staff received over $1.78 million in bonuses.
On defense, bonuses are due to coordinator and linebackers coach Jim Knowles ($332,690), defensive line coach Larry Johnson ($198,388), defensive passing game coordinator Tim Walton ($170,000) and safeties coach Perry Eliano ($87,550). Special teams coordinator Parker Fleming’s bonus totaled $85,000.
Among other notable staff members, bonuses were paid to strength and conditioning director Mickey Marotti ($146,580), player personnel director Mark Pantoni ($56,907) and chief of staff Quinn Tempel ($44,200).
The bonus structure does not change if Ohio State wins its non-playoff bowl game. Bonuses are to be paid within 60 days of the conclusion of the bowl game.
Coaching contracts were obtained by cleveland.com via public records requests.
C.J. Stroud and Garrett Wilson connected for 11 touchdowns over 64 receptions as part of Ohio State’s prolific 2021 passing attack.
