Jimbo Fisher, the head coach at Texas A&M, has been fired.
COLLEGE STATION, TX — Bringing in Jimbo Fisher, a national championship coach, seemed to be exactly what Texas A&M needed to finally become a championship contender.
Fisher, however, was fired Sunday after failing to replicate his success at Florida State in six years with the Aggies, despite owing him more than $75 million.
“That’s the hard part in all of this,” Bjork said. “How many current head coaches have won national titles?” As a result, everyone was overjoyed. However, it only goes back a couple of years. Do we have traction? Is there any hope? What are our predictions for the future? And we didn’t see any improvement in the trend lines.”
Fisher went 45-25 in the Southeastern Conference and 27-21 overall, never winning more than nine games in a season. The Aggies are 6-4 with two games remaining after defeating Mississippi State 51-10 on Saturday night.

Earlier this week, Bjork met with university president Mark Welsh and Texas A&M system chancellor John Sharp, telling them that a coaching change was “absolutely necessary.”
“The assessment that I delivered was that we are not reaching our full potential,” she stated. “We are not in the championship conversation and something was not quite right about our direction and the plan.”
For the final two games, assistant coach Elijah Robinson will serve as interim coach. Mark Robinson, the assistant athletic director for football operations, was also let go on Sunday.
Bjork broke the news to Fisher on Sunday morning at Kyle Field in a meeting that the AD described as ‘quick and cordial’.
At the end of the 2017 season, Fisher was enticed away from Florida State, where he had won a national championship in 2013.
That contract was extended to ten years after he led the Aggies to a 9-1 record in the 2020 pandemic season, A&M’s best year under Fisher by far.
Fisher is owed the remainder of his contract regardless of whether he finds another coaching job, a staggering buyout that is more than triple the largest ever given to a fired head coach.
