sad news for brisbane broncos coach…

Brisbane Broncos official website Kurt Capewell will sign with the Warriors right away.

Kurt Capewell, the Broncos’ premiership-winning second-rower, has been released and has signed a three-year contract with the Warriors.

Capewell was recently photographed meeting with Warriors coach Andrew Webster, with the Broncos now allowing him to leave despite being under contract until the end of 2024.

After leading the Broncos to a grand final appearance this year, coach Kevin Walters paid tribute to the second-rower.

“Capes has played an important role for us over the past couple of seasons, both on and off the field as we laid down the foundations to turn things around as a club,” Walters said in a statement.

“He is a great bloke and a wonderful servant of our game, and he has made a big impact at our club in a short period of time since joining us in 2021.

“You won’t find many people who have a bad word to say about Kurt.

“On behalf of everyone at the Broncos, I’d like to thank Capes for all his efforts at the club and we wish him well.”

The Warriors confirmed the 30-year-old is farewelling his teammates before making the move across the ditch next week.

Warriors general manager Andrew McFadden confirmed there was always a desire to sign Capewell immediately.

“We’re thrilled to be able to lock in a player of Kurt’s quality and experience immediately,” he said.

“With room in our squad we tabled a long-term offer in the hope of bringing Kurt to club from 2024. We’re grateful to the Broncos for their help in allowing him to leave early.

“Quite apart from what Kurt will provide as a player, he’ll be immensely valuable with his experience in a mentoring role for the young back rowers we have coming through the club.”

Webster, who was part of the Panthers coaching staff when Capewell won a premiership there, spoke glowingly of his new recruit.

“Kurt is a winner with tremendous passion and a terrific work ethic,” he said.

“I thoroughly enjoyed working with him when we were both at Penrith and I know from that experience that he’ll add so much to our

squad and to the club in an overall sense.

“He totally fits the profile of the type of player we want.”

Capewell played 43 matches with the Broncos after joining in 2022.
