Broncos Jesse Arthars, Deane Mariner and Tristan Sailor have swapped balls for the boards, heading out for a surf with current World No. 20 Callum Robson at Kirra Beach, on the Gold Coast.
Despite being the cousin of Cowboy Reece Robson, the World Surf League Championship Tour competitor was only too happy to pledge his Broncos allegiance for the day, to give the Broncos’ Gold Coast-based trio some tips.
It comes ahead of the NRL and WSL both launching their seasons in the US in the New Year.
They were also joined by fellow WSL surfers Jacob Willcox and Morgan Cibilic, as well as one lucky Broncos fan, who won the opportunity for the surf session through a consumer competition run across the 2023 Australian leg earlier this year through the WSL’s partnership with Bailey Ladders, which now also includes Weather Guard.
The iconic Aussie brand is also a partner of the Brisbane Broncos.
“It was cool to have some pro surfers showing me and the boys a thing or two in the surf, we definitely needed it,” said Arthars. “We all got a few pointers, which was good.
“We do a fair bit of cross-code work at the club, and we’re so thankful for opportunities like this and it’s great to have sponsors like Bailey Ladders that sponsor these Aussie sports, so it’s been a great day.”
“I’ve always lived on the beach, so I’m always out and about.
“That’s one of the reasons other than growing up here, I like to hang out at the beach, out of the city – it’s good for the mind, it’s a good lifestyle.
Robson, a Bailey Ladders Ambassador hasn’t ruled out being in Vegas for the NRL season opener, currently scheduled to be at Sunset Beach in Hawaii when the Broncos arrive in camp in Los Angeles, before heading to Portugal for the March 6 tournament.
“It’s awesome, it’s good to see the boys from league come down, I’m sure they’re stoked to have some time away from training and come down and enjoy the waves,” Robson said.
“They all loved it and it was classic to watch them get in the water, and they were actually really good. I think they might be inspired to get a board and get stuck into it full-time.”
Arthars returned to Red Hill for preseason last week, hungry to build on the momentum from a breakout 2023 season heading into Round 1.
“I’ve only been back since Thursday but it’s been pretty tough.
“It (season 2023) was a big confidence boost for myself, and it was probably my biggest season so I’ll look to build on that for the coming season and train hard in the preseason because that’s what ultimately sets you up. It’s going to be good for competition in the preseason.
“We’ve just got to make sure we’re training well, I know the other boys will want to put on a real good performance when we get over there.
Taking to the waves alongside Mariner, Arthars has also earmarked his teammate to stand up in season 2024.
“He’s a good young player coming through our ranks and has been really exciting the last few years, he really tears it up on the field during training so I’m looking forward to seeing Deano progress throughout the preseason and into the season.
