Burnley is preparing for a possible January transfer window move for Che Adams of Southampton.
In an effort to stave off being immediately demoted down to the Championship, the Clarets plan to strengthen their offensive options in the winter transfer window.
The Saints attacker has reportedly been highlighted as a potential transfer target due to uncertainty surrounding his future at St. Mary’s, according to Teamtalk.
With Russell Martin’s team hoping to make the playoffs for the first time, the Scotland international has played in 18 of the 22 league games this season.
With four goals and two assists, the 27-year-old has helped Southampton, who are now ranked fourth in the standings.
The danger of signing for Burnley
Given that Adams’ contract is scheduled to expire in the summer of 2024, many people are concerned about his future with the team.
It could even be possible to negotiate a reduced price contract in January to prevent losing him for nothing at the end of the campaign.
With Burnley’s present standing in the Premier League table, the striker could be hesitant to accept a transfer there.
After a difficult season in the top division, Vincent Kompany’s team is presently six points outside of safety in 19th place in the table.
Although the Lancashire team may yet be able to make it through the division, it is becoming more and more likely that they will tumble right down to the second level.
In the long term, this makes it a less desirable decision for Adams, and it may cause him to reconsider his options.
In a Burnley squad that truly needs the decisive edge that the seasoned forward can offer in the closing third, Adams would be a sure regular minutes player.
However, their chances of making it to the Premier League are still slim, and Adams might not be willing to return to the Championship right away.
Given the amount of latitude in his contract, he could decide to postpone making any decisions about his future until the summer.
Southampton, however, could even be moving in the other direction from the Clarets.
Currently tied for third place with Leeds United, Martin’s team hasn’t dropped a league game since September.
The Saints are producing excellent football, winning games on a regular basis, and they ought to, at minimum, make the playoffs.
Regardless of Southampton’s circumstances, Adams would be better off waiting until the summer to join Burnley as he will know who is in the Premier League and who is in the Championship. There will also undoubtedly be a number of potential suitors by then, so it shouldn’t be too risky to become a free agent rather than seizing the opportunity to join Burnley. That is an enticing situation for Adams to stay with, as he could boost his own transfer value by playing a key role in helping the club go straight back up to the top flight.
