Saints Begin Assessing Potential 2024 Coaching Possibilities

Under Sean Payton, the New Orleans Saints advanced to the NFC Championship Game twice, won the Super Bowl once, and made it to the playoffs nine times. Now that head coach Dennis Allen has fallen short of expectations, the Saints should begin assessing potential 2024 coaching possibilities.

Allen, the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders from 2012 to 2014, was a superb defensive coordinator with the Saints. Allen emerged as the front-runner in the Saints coaching search when Payton departed and New Orleans required a new head coach. At the time, it looked like a dubious choice, and the team has been below.500 ever since.

2024 New Orleans Saints coaching candidates

The Saints place considerable emphasis on familiarity, if their recent coaching search is any indication. That is why two of our candidates for the Saints coaching staff have links to the company and New Orleans, starting with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn of the Detroit Lions.

Prior to retirement in 2008, Glenn, the 12th overall selection in the 1994 NFL Draft, was a player for the Saints. He became a defensive backs coach for Payton’s team in New Orleans a few years later. Glenn was a well regarded instructor and leader who oversaw the growth of the Saints’ secondary when he was in New Orleans.

Many people in the game think Glenn has the potential to become an NFL head coach because he has already interviewed for several head coaching positions in previous years. Glenn may be a desirable option for a return to New Orleans because of his reputation as a strong leader, communicator, and defensive strategist.

Although Brian Callahan, the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, created some head coaching speculation in 2023, he was eventually passed up. Given that clubs believed Eric Bieniemy’s quarterback contributed to his success as an offensive coordinator, it wouldn’t be shocking if Callahan faced the same criticism.
