The Texas football team is going to the College Football Playoffs after they finally overcame their setbacks in 2023 and won the Big 12. The head coach of Texas, Steve Sarkisian, is the reason the Longhorns have been waiting for a while to return to this level. It was surprising that the Longhorns head coach didn’t take home the Big 12 Coach of the Year trophy after such an outstanding season, as many had predicted.
In the Big 12 championship game, Texas football defeated Oklahoma State football 49–21. With the victory, the Longhorns advanced to the College Football Playoffs. Big 12 Coach of the Year went to one of those coaches; it was not Steve Sarkisian. It was Mike Gundy, the head coach of the Cowboys.
In a recent piece from The Athletic, a number of Big 12 coaches spoke candidly about Sarkisian and Texas. One coach believes that Sarkisian should never have won the award because of the Longhorns’ SEC exit.
Regarding Sarkisian, one Big 12 defensive expert stated, “He has little-to-no tendencies.” “The next week, he breaks it if he has one. He makes excellent in-game changes. He had a counter that we had never seen before that was something out of an And1 mix tape, and we played a stack man idea to a route we felt was coming.
He is very deliberate when taking shots and is patient when calling plays since he relies on the run and perimeter pass games.Considering the work he’s done with this club, I think it was a major letdown that he didn’t win Big 12 Coach of the Year. The unfortunate thing is that coaches vote on this, which indicates that Texas’s exit from the league is more important than choosing the best worthy coach.
Ultimately, Texas and Sarkisian are more concerned with their upcoming College Football Playoff semifinal clash. On New Year’s Day, the #3-ranked Longhorns and #2-ranked Washington Huskies square off in the CFP semifinal in the Sugar Bowl. The victor advances to the national championship round to either against Michigan or Alabama. That holds greater significance than being named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.
