Breaking News;Detroit Lions January Transfer Target

The Detroit Lions made another flurry of roster moves on Friday that resulted in them having one remaining roster move heading into Saturday’s bout with the Dallas Cowboys. Before we get into them, a reminder of the roster moves they made on Thursday:

  • Waived CB Chase Lucas
  • Waived LB Trevor Nowaske
  • Activated FB Jason Cabinda

On Friday, here’s what they did:

  • Waived FB Jason Cabinda
  • Signed K Michael Badgley to the active 53-man roster (from practice squad)
  • Released DL Chris Smith from practice squad
  • Signed OL Michael Schofield to practice squad

On the surface, it certainly looks odd that the Lions activated Cabinda on Thursday only to cut him on Friday. That said, he seems like a very likely candidate to return to the practice squad should he clear waivers. How many teams are eagerly awaiting to claim a fullback on waivers in Week 17? Doesn’t seem like a lot, but you never know—particularly with a seasoned player and special teamer like Cabinda.

More notably, the Lions still have a remaining roster spot available to them for Saturday’s game. That could mean another player being signed from the practice squad before kickoff against the Cowboys. It could be Bruce Irvin or they could wait until next week to activate someone like C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The Lions have already declared Gardner-Johnson out, so even if he gets activated before kickoff, he will not be permitted to play against the Cowboys.

If the Lions do choose to sign another practice squad player to the 53-man roster, it will allow them to temporarily elevate two other players from the practice squad for gameday, if they want. Those roster moves are expected to be announced on Saturday afternoon prior to the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff.
