Unfortunately, Aaron Jones who is 29-years-old could be another tough decision the team has to make. His age, coupled with his injuries, and his $17 million cap hit next year may make it near impossible to retain the star running back. If that winds up being the case, there is one name floating around that the Packers could very easily be interested in.
The Green Bay Packers have made a number of difficult decisions in recent years. Trading away Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers in consecutive offseasons undoubtedly catapulted the franchise into a new era. On offense, that era is led by a slew of young and talented players. Jordan Love, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft make up a sizable portion of that group. With the exception of Jordan Love, all of those players were added to this team in the last 1-2 seasons.
Spotrac contract analyst Mike Ginnitti explained Tony Pollard’s likely outcome this week by pointing out that the Cowboys have other priorities ahead of Pollard, including star quarterback Dak Prescott and star receiver CeeDee Lamb, both of whom could be the highest paid players in their respective positions.
The Packers may be able to capitalize on this opportunity during NFL free agency:
“The Cowboys will be handing out contracts left and right this winter/spring, including a couple of blockbusters for Prescott and Lamb.” A $13 million second franchise tag for Pollard seems out of the question right now, but so does any sort of multi-year guaranteed extension.
Pollard enters the free agent market in search of a cap-adjusted version of Miles Sanders’ free agent deal (3 years, $20.5 million).
It’s possible that the Packers will be able to offer Pollard a better contract than the Cowboys. Many people were surprised when the Packers pursued a trade for the Colts’ then-holdout running back Jonathan Taylor during the offseason. With Taylor’s age, the Packers saw him as a potential future player. Something they’ve put a lot of effort into in recent drafts.
Pollard just finished a season in which he had over 1,300 all-purpose yards and 12 total touchdowns. With six games remaining in the season, he has nearly 900 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns.
