A few League One teams, including WANDERERS, have been connected to a loan transfer for Joe Taylor of Luton Town.
During his first half of the season with Colchester United, the 21-year-old striker has scored 12 goals for a team that has been suffering around the bottom of the table.
Taylor was brought back by the Hatters earlier this week with the intention of sending him out on loan to a higher level. Since then, stories have connected Taylor to Bolton, as well as Wycombe and Oxford United.
Wanderers have indicated that the January transfer window will be rather quiet, but they still have enough capacity on their roster and their loan quota to add more players if necessary.
Due to their established relationship with Luton—the two teams will play one other in the FA Cup third round on Sunday—and the fact that Ian Evatt is a friend and former teammate of Hatters manager Rob Edwards, they could be well-positioned as well.
Taylor had previously worked as a bartender in addition to holding a part-time contract with his club. In March 2022, he was signed by Peterborough United to play professional football from National League side King’s Lynn.
He made twenty appearances for Posh, mostly as a substitute, but he was good enough to catch the eye of head of recruitment Mick Harford and head scout Phil Chapple at Luton, earning him a move to Kenilworth Road for a team vying for promotion to the Premier League.
He started the play-off game at Wembley as a substitute, and although his late goal against Coventry City was disallowed, he scored in the penalty shootout to help the Hatters make an amazing comeback to the top division for the first time since 1992.
With top scorer Dion Charles commanding a regular berth beside either Victor Adeboyejo or Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Wanderers have four options for strikers. Former Luton star Cameron Jerome is utilized off the bench to finish games.
But in the beginning of December, Dan Nlundulu’s services were cut short due to a major hamstring injury that needed surgery. The former Southampton striker is currently beginning his recuperation, although a comeback is not anticipated until the very end of the campaign.
Carlos Mendes Gomes was also absent for Bolton until the beginning of February due to his call-up by Guinea Bissau for the African Cup of Nations. Another former Luton player, he has spent most of his time at the club in midfield, and Evatt thought he may be a useful backup striker.
