Pete Thamel of ESPN reported on Thursday that Brooks, who sustained a season-ending injury against TCU on November 11, will to forgo his last two years of eligibility and enter the 2024 NFL draft. Following Texas’ 37–31 loss to No. 2 Washington in the College Football Playoff semifinals on Monday, the redshirt sophomore’s rumored decision to leave the Longhorns deals another devastating blow.
If nothing changes, Texas’s top rusher in 2023, Brooks, will leave Austin after a breakout, career-best season. The Hallettsville, Texas native missed the last four games of the season, which included the Big 12 title game and the CFP semifinal at the Sugar Bowl, but still managed 1,139 running yards and 10 touchdowns in just 10 games. He also had 25 receptions for 286 yards and another touchdown.
With Brooks now set to enter the pro ranks, the explosive six-foot tailback figures to have his fair share of suitors, with an expectation that he’s set to be ready by training camp, per Thamel.
