It’s possible that Luke Ayling’s time at Leeds United will end in the January transfer window. This week, Sky Sports revealed that Ayling, whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign, is being courted by Middlesbrough, a team in the Championship.
Despite starting eight second-tier games this season, Ayling hasn’t played in the competition since making a cameo in the 1-0 victory over Leicester in early November. As it happens, since then, he has only made the bench four times (Transfermarkt). Should the Englishman depart, he would not be the only notable player to leave Elland Road this month; another player who has been having trouble getting playing time may also be heading out.
Deep in Gnonto discussions, Everton
Wilfried Gnonto, who joined Leeds from Swiss club FC Zurich for approximately £3.9 million only the previous year, made 28 appearances for the first team in his rookie season. Only seven of his 21 appearances this year have come from starts in the Championship (Transfermarkt).
Everton may have felt more confident about their ability to sign the forward as a result of everything. As per journalist Rudy Galetti, the Toffees have been in contact with Leeds for a transfer “for weeks” and have considered him as their “main target” since November.
It is “working” toward a “agreement” between 49ers Enterprises and Goodison Park counterparts over the transfer fee; after that, it will depend on Gnonto’s ability to reach a personal accord.
Gnonto should have more opportunities in Leeds.
Given Gnonto’s limited chances under Daniel Farke this season, it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise if he desired to go. However, it still wouldn’t be a shame if he moved on from Yorkshire.
Although he has only contributed two direct goals this season, his low stats can be somewhat attributed to his relative lack of play, and at twenty years old, he still has a lot of potential. In fact, he has already accrued 13 caps for the Italian team, the defending European champions, Transfermarkt, despite his young.
After scoring in a 5-2 Nations League loss to Germany in 2022, Gnonto became his nation’s youngest-ever goal scorer (Reuters). He’s definitely worth a shot if you’re Everton.
