The Ohio State football team had a rough December overall, but 2024 has started off much better for the Buckeyes. Ryan Day’s team has already signed one of the best transfer offensive lineman in the country and a five-star cornerback in the 2025 class after only one week of January. Furthermore, there appears to be some indication that a celebrity running back may be involved, but time will tell.
During the All-American Bowl halftime, Ohio State and position coach Tim Walton received a huge boost on Saturday afternoon when five-star cornerback Devin Sanchez declared his commitment to the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-2 Texas native picked Ohio State over Texas A&M and Alabama to become the No. 2 wide receiver and No. 6 overall in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports Composite.
“A cornerback from Ohio State, he’s good at everything,” Sanchez said to Eleven Warriors. They like to press and play off, so you may do that. You have an opportunity to be DBU here and to be on that CB wall if you can accomplish all of things and excel at it. While there aren’t many universities that qualify as DBUs, Ohio State is undoubtedly the best. Take a peek at the men in the league. It says it all.
Sanchez received his first offer from the Buckeyes in January of last year, and he worked with Walton during a recruiting camp in June. While Sanchez continued to consider his choices during his recruitment, he acknowledged that he has been silently committing to Ohio State since November 2. The gifted wide receiver made his way back to Columbus in October for the Penn State game.
It’s a pleasant feeling. After committing, Sanchez remarked, “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. Since November 2, I’ve been quite devoted. I’m pleased with my choice. I am happy with the work I am doing. The Ohio State staff, including the coaches, and their recent accomplishments. It involves winning a lot. It bothers me to lose. That has a major role in my choice. Definitely, I want to get to the playoffs and defeat the squad from up north. No. 1 is defeating the team from up north.
Two of the main reasons for Sanchez’s choice were his friendship with Walton and the opportunity to face Ohio State’s best wide outs. His parents, Deetra and Daniel, who were also UTEP athletes in the past, are thrilled that he chose to commit to the Buckeyes, even if it would put him a little bit further away from home than they would likely prefer.
Devin’s mother Deetra told 247Sports, “It started with building a relationship with whoever Devin was going to be around.” “We wanted him to be in a secure and comfortable environment.” I didn’t want to spend evenings awake. More than simply football, we wanted him to be with people who genuinely care about him. There is a sense of family at Ohio State, and the coaches treat their players with great respect. It seems like a perfect fit for Coach Walton. He has a tonne of expertise, and I like the direction he’s led us in.
Walton is currently having an incredible recruiting run. Following the acquisition of three excellent corners in the 2024 class (Aaron Scott, Bryce West, and Miles Lockhart), he has already locked up two players who rank in the top 100 at the position in 2025 (Blake Woodby and Sanchez). In his efforts to revive “BIA” at Ohio State, Walton is doing admirably, even though there are now many open positions in Columbus.
Although Sanchez’s ascent to the college football levels may take some time, the Buckeyes added another player who can assist them on the field in Seth McLaughlin, a former Alabama center who committed to Ohio State via the transfer portal. McLaughlin, a three-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, was rated by 247Sports as the top offensive lineman transfer overall and the top IOL transfer.
