Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a freshly acquired utility player, recently discussed what motivated him to sign a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays during a Zoom call with the media.
“I honestly didn’t think so many teams would make the call. It was very satisfying and left me feeling somewhat overwhelmed. When you think about it all, the city matters, playing time matters, money matters, years matters, but ultimately, for me, wins are the most important thing.”
The Blue Jays have been largely mute in the free-agent market and silent in the trade market following their botched attempt to sign Ohtani north of the border. The only two additions the team has made this winter is Kiner-Falefa, who signed a two-year, $15 million contract. The other is the $10.5 million one-year contract that center fielder Kevin Kiermaier re-signed.
When Kiner-Falefa, 28, was a member of the New York Yankees last year, he slashed.242/.306/.340 with six home runs and 37 runs batted in. His versatility on the diamond is well recognized, as demonstrated by his position-specific games from the previous season. In 2023, IKF participated in 31 games at third base, 7 games in right field, 41 games in center field, 37 games in left field, and one game at short stop. Whenever John Schneider and team decide to use him this season on the field. I think he feels at ease there.
“Winning is when I’m most happy.” Guys, in my opinion, bond more. And all I wanted was to take part in something unique. Because you get to perform in front of the entire nation, I think performing in Toronto is unique. There, I always sensed power.”
While Kiner-Falefa’s precise position on this Blue Jays team is yet unknown, IKF’s adaptability on the diamond will undoubtedly help him play more games.
